The Pros and Cons of Daylight Savings Time
A lot of us were born into daylight savings time since it has been around for a very long time. We take it for granted that that’s the way it is. But there are a few who have questioned the practicality of this practice.
To add more day time to our days, this practice was enforced. We have more time for daylight to do our work and to go to school. In temperate regions where there is variation in the amount of daylight against darkness throughout the season, this is very common.
Some people want to know if DST is really necessary today. One of the reasons for daylight savings time is for energy conservation. Since daylight savings time give you more daylight, then you reduce the use of electricity. Depending on when the sun sets, this determines the amount of electricity that people use at home. So if the sun sets when it is almost your bedtime, then you don’t need much electricity as you would if the sun sets long before you do. This is assuming that people go to bed at the same time all year round, and some do. So, if we move the sunset an hour later a peson will use less energy in the summer. Bedtime means putting out the lights.
During the winter, there is need for morning light. During summer the days are longer but during winter people wake up after the sun rises if the time is artificially changed by daylight savings time.
With daylight savings time, the opportunities for activities outdoors is increased. During winter, there is light outside late so people have more time to remain active and do outdoor activities.
Driving home where there is still light is safer. DST is said to reduce crime which happens in the dark.
However, not all people agree that daylight savings time should continue. Not everyone thinks DST is such a good idea. Many places in the world do not observe daylight savings time. It is burdensome to adjust your clocks twice a year for a very few benefits. DST changes your sleep patterns twice a year. When sleep patterns are changed, it affects work productivity and can lead to auto accidents. If you are a forgetful person, you can show up late or early for work when the changes occur.
With DST, air conditioning costs increase during the summer. Air-conditioning uses more electricity than light.
DST adds pollution since more cars are out late.
Animals keep to their body clocks do they don’t observe DST and this is why farmers don’t appreciate it.
